CAATA and AAPI Actions to
Combat Anti-AAPI Hate and Violence: March – July 2021

In response to the murder of six Asian women in Atlanta, GA on March 17, 2021, Consortium of Asian American Theatres & Artists (CAATA) presented this national Theatre Anti-Asian Hate PSA, “Strong Together. And Stronger than Ever.” which includes the voices of 50+ Asian/Pasifika/Native/Indigenous/MENA Theatre Leaders.

The second episode of CAATA’s online series “Healing Over Hate” featured a presentation on a presentation on bystander intervention tactics by Dax Valdes of Right to Be (formerly Hollaback); and by a presentation by Adriana Li (Program Coordinator and Instructor, IMPACT Boston) that introduce responses and skills that can be helpful in the face of race-based harassment including adrenaline management to regulate emotions, de-escalation strategies to use with the assailant, verbal boundary setting techniques, and best practices for bystander intervention when witnessing harassment or other unsafe situations.

The fourth and final episode of CAATA’s “Healing Over Hate” online series presented an information session with representatives from the National Endowment for the Arts speaking on the American Rescue Plan's Grants to Organizations program livestreaming on the global, commons-based, peer produced HowlRound TV network at howlround.tv.

The ninth and last episode of CAATA’s online series “Return to the Source” over the pandemic was also the first episode of its next online series “Healing Over Hate,” created in response to the Atlanta massacre and the pandemic rise of anti-Asian hate. This episode featured a conversation with Ginger Klee, therapist and clinical counselor, on trauma-informed psychological responses to hate and violence

Healing Over Hate, Episode 3 featured Second Generation Productions’ (2g) online performance of INFLECTIONS, five short new works about the undulations of the Asian American life. These 2g commissioned pieces were presented in partnership with Howlround Theatre Commons in Boston, MA, a non-profit organization that operates as part of Emerson College's Office of the Arts.
