Kepano (Stephen) Richter

I am a former United States Marine, award-winning playwright, filmmaker, and Ph.D. candidate in Literature at the University of California Santa Cruz, specializing in Translation and Adaptation Studies. Much of my work and research restages and rewrites classical and early modern tragedies, to take an honest look at the tragedies AAPI experience every single day in the streets, along the border, in the military, and in prisons across the United States of America. Now more than ever, our BIPOC community needs to transform our theater spaces into "contact zones," for political intervention and to teach empathy, by allowing our audiences to spend a couple of hours in our shoes. I believe performance in America should absolutely look and sound like the changing demographics of America: a multiracial, multilingual country that is evolving into a minority-majority, a country founded and made stronger by immigrants.
