The Consortium of Asian American Theaters and Artists (CAATA) seeks a dynamic, focused, hardworking and highly collaborative arts administrator for the position of Local Coordinator to support organizers of the 2020 National Asian American Theater Conference and Festival (ConFest) taking place at the University of Hawaii, Manoa, August 7 – 16, 2020. Candidates should have strong organization, communication and interpersonal skills, be detail-oriented and also adept at handling multiple tasks with ease, and enjoy working on their own as well as with members of the executive team tasked with producing the ConFest on behalf of the organization. Prior performing arts festival and/or conference organizing experience preferred. Knowledge and contacts within Hawaii’s theater, academic and/or non-profit sectors a plus. Solid proficiency with social media, commitment to Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities, and interest in theater all highly desirable.
Job responsibilities
Serve as the point person for outreach to theaters, artists, and academics to generate applications for panels and performances at ConFest.
Coordinate the selection process with CAATA Steering Committee members.
Serve as the point person for CAATA national Steering Committee and local Host Committee; coordinate communications, meetings and gatherings.
Support ConFest organizers with scheduling, production, staffing and execution of ConFest activities including CAATA-produced performances, showcases, play readings, conference plenary and breakout sessions, opening and closing events.
Arrange venues and accommodations for all ConFest activities.
Provide administrative support to production personnel and assist in coordination, as needed, with venues, local staff, vendors, etc.
Organize and implement, via email, social media, and other means, outreach to constituent/affinity groups to generate attendance and participation at ConFest – both local and nationally. Targets to include colleges and universities, local community organizations, youth programs, theater artists/workers, social justice and community activists, among others.
Oversee the marketing and design of materials for ConFest.
Coordinate video and photo documentation for ConFest.
Recruit, train, place and oversee volunteers utilized during the lead up to and during ConFest
Serve as the primary local liaison for participating artists, panelists, speakers, etc., with regard to travel and accommodation support, host hotel arrangements, and overseeing hospitality and registration.
Serve as the primary local liaison for artists and companies with related partner productions taking place concurrent with the ConFest and be cross-marketed.
Provide materials and support for CAATA fundraising and sponsorship related to the ConFest.
This is a part-time, independent contractor position starting in November 2019 through August 2020 with hours increasing as the event draws near. A stipend starting at $15,000 is available, based on experience.
The position reports to the CAATA Executive Director and ConFest co-chairs Leilani Chan of TeAda Productions and Haili’opua Baker at UH Manoa, and works closely with other Board, national Steering Committee, and local Cohort members.

The Theatre program at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa is renowned for its Asian theatre productions and course offerings, as well as programs in Western and Hawaiian theatre (acting, directing, history, theory), design, playwriting and TYA (theatre for young audiences). Coursework goes hand in hand with productions staged in the 600-seat Kennedy Theatre and the intimate Earle Ernst Lab Theatre. The newest addition to the department is the Hawaiian Theatre program. The program includes courses on the history of theatre in Hawai‘i, the study and analysis of indigenous Hawaiian theatre, and training in both traditional and contemporary Hawaiian performance forms.
