Yukie Shiroma

I am a dancer/choreographer/director born in Hawai‘i, raised in San Francisco, and now reside in Honolulu. I teach Okinawan dance at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa in the Department of Theatre and Dance. I am Artistic Director of physical theatre/mask company, Monkey Waterfall, based in Honolulu. Since 2000, the Company has been presenting site-specific performances responding to issues including the marketing of Hawai‘i ("Shrines to Paradise"), addictions ("Monkey on my Back" and "Still on my Back") to name a few. Currently, I am directing and choreographing a cross-cultural dance and music collaboration with Kenny Endo (taiko) and Norman Kaneshiro (Okinawan music) in a project called "Imaginary Homelands" which was to be performed in Honolulu in 2020 (canceled due to the pandemic), and is being re-scheduled for state-wide concerts in 2022.
